From its inception, the Cornerstone Foundation has recognised and responded to the issue of poverty in Bermuda. In 2012 however, the Foundation experienced a paradigm shift in its response to poverty as we began to see the evidence of entitlement and an over dependency on the community. It was out of this shift that the idea of the Cornerstone Christmas Store was born. Since the very first Christmas Store in 2012, many families have been given the gift of dignity by giving them a "hand up" rather than a "hand out." The Christmas Store shelves are stocked with brand new toys, gift cards, games, non perishable goods, household products, and fresh apples and oranges. All of these items are sold at prices discounted by 80%- 90% and shoppers can make choices about what to purchase and therefore have the opportunity to feel good about how they are spending their money. The decorated store and friendly helpful volunteers create a warm and welcoming shopping experience. This is topped off with free gift wrapping, a craft area for children and delicious refreshments to enjoy while shopping. Our aim is to give a small gift of dignity back to those who really need it. This has not been accomplished on our own but has been the result of support from individuals and corporations. The Foundation and the families who have participated are extremely thankful.
The Christmas Store will take place this year on Friday, December 6th and Saturday, December 7th.
We invite you to partner with us by making a financial donation toward the purchase of gifts and groceries. Donations can be made via online banking to the Cornerstone Foundation HSBC #010-147304-011, Reference "Your Name, Christmas Store."
The success of the Christmas Store also depends on the support of volunteers to fill the following roles: set up and breakdown, pricing of toys, personal shopping, gift wrapping, hospitality, baking, prayer and transportation.
